on a night the mares

have their heads on

the ground. Bricks

suck heat in deeper.

Lavender walls,

already many dusky

shades of mauve.

Where is the girl who

leaped into Otter

Falls, a pearl of a girl

growing inside?

And the young beauty

who turned churlish

and strange? With

her turtles and rage?

Where a mother

danced in a full skirt,

kicked her legs to

Russian balalaika?

Now immaculate

polished wood and

glass turn the rooms

ice. The heart

of the house lies

open thru thick dust

on the sky light,

and a pale sun
